Drivers have been forced onto the hard shoulder of the M2 between Faversham and Sittingbourne this morning after a two-car smash.
The crash happened shortly before 8am and has caused tailbacks between junctions 5 and 6 of the London-bound carriageway.
Firefighters were still at the scene an hour-and-a-half later attempting to free a woman from one of the vehicles.
The 40-year-old woman was taken by ambulance to Medway Maritime hospital with back and pelvic pain.
She was fully conscious.
Both lanes were shut off and drivers were being told to use the hard shoulder.
IT manager Simon Perez witnessed the rescue effort on his way to work in Whitstable.
He said: "It looked like a BMW and a red car had collided with each other and then the red car had gone into the central reservation.
"From what I could see the firefighters were trying to cut someone out of the red car.
"It looked pretty serious."
