A Canterbury man has been arrested after reportedly breaking into the driver’s cab of a train.

The 51-year-old was held by British Transport Police (BTP) as he allegedly climbed out of the window onto the tracks at about 5.45am.

He was arrested on suspicion of obstructing the railway.

A spokesman for BTP said: “We were called at around 5.45am to Totnes railway station following a report a man had entered the driver’s cab of the overnight sleeper from London to Penzance.

"At this stage, there is no evidence to suggest any threats were made towards the driver or other passengers during the incident, in which it is alleged the man also climbed out of a window and onto the tracks.

"The man got back onto the train, where rail staff were able to talk to him, keeping him onboard until the train arrived into Plymouth, where he was arrested by our officers.

"The 51-year-old – who is from Canterbury – is currently in police custody where he is being held on suspicion of obstructing the railway.

"We would like to stress that at this time, this appears to be an isolated incident rather than part of any wider threat to the rail network."

The incident took place between Totnes and Plymouth.

Rush-hour trains between London Paddington and Penzance, passing through Plymouth, were delayed.
