A man hit by a train at a Kent station has suffered life-changing injuries, police have confirmed.

Officers, paramedics, fire crews and an air ambulance all descended on Chartham, near Canterbury, on Saturday following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

Lines between Ashford International and Canterbury West were blocked for almost two hours following the incident.

Today a spokesman for the British Transport Police has revealed: "A man was taken to hospital for treatment to life-changing injuries, where he remains.

"The incident is not being treated as suspicious."

The man is understood to be in his 60s.

Emergency services arrived at the scene at about 11.40am on Saturday.

Their vehicles lined Station Road and villagers described seeing an air ambulance in the area.

One local told KentOnline: "Station Road was completely blocked by emergency vehicles.

"I've never seen so many.

"There was no access in or out for residents."

Trains did not run between Ashford and Canterbury until 1.45pm.

Southeastern advised commuters to use bus routes free of charge while the line was blocked.
