Men pound the seafront
for Cancer Research UK
Heating engineer Karl Newton had all the motivation he needed to
join the 278 runners who took part in Man on the Run for Cancer
Research UK in Herne Bay on Sunday.
Because 15 years ago he faced a battle with the disease after
being diagnosed with testicular cancer.
He was just 18 and a lifeguard when he first went to the doctor
after realising something was seriously wrong.
But the cancer spread and it was the specialists at the Royal
Marsen Hospital who eventually saved his life with a series of
operations and chemotherapy.
Speaking as he prepared to start the 5K run, Karl from
Broomfield said: "It's my first time here but I know what fantastic
work Cancer Research UK does.
"I have been in remission now for 15 years and there is no doubt
the treatment I received got me through it."
He added: "There's a great atmosphere and it makes you realise
you how many people are affected."
Many of the men and boys taking part in the event along the
seafront from Hampton to Swalecliffe were running in memory of
someone lost to cancer or in celebration of others who had
survived.
kmfm morning show presenter Neil Redding compered as the runners
gathered before the start and fitness instructor Kirsty Pellant
from the Hip Hop fitness and dancewear store in Canterbury led the
warm up exercises.
Race organiser Sarah Gower said: "We were pleased with the turn
out although it is obviously no where near the 2,000 women we get
for Race for Life.
"Perhaps, like with health matters, men are a little more
reluctant to come forward but I think the event will continue to
gain momentum."
