Plans to refurbish one of the main shopping precincts in Canterbury have been thrown into doubt after councillors were forced to defer a decision to move the city centre market.

The scheme involved relocating the traders and their stalls from St George's Street to nearby Iron Bar Lane and Square.

But businesses in that area, including WH Smith and Woolworths, complained it would severely restrict access to the rear of their shops.

Now the planning application to move the market has been deferred for council officers to assess the objections and options in more detail.

But it could result in the council having to find another location for the market traders if it wishes to pursue it plans to refurbish St George's Street.
