Marlowe plans approved

Ambitious plans for a new Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury took a step closer when the multi-million pound project was given planning permission.

The new theatre will include a three-tier, 1,200-seat main auditorium, enhanced public areas, including foyers, restaurants and bars, a riverside walk and city centre piazza for outdoor performances and exhibitions, as well as a second, 150-seat theatre.

The present Marlowe will be demolished, except for the flytower, which will be remodelled.

The theatre is expected to shut early in 2009 when a money-raising appeal will be launched for the £6million still needed to complete the project. It is due to reopen in mid-2011.

While the theatre is closed the Marlowe will be bringing performances to a number of venues across the region. Details will be published shortly.

Although the planning permission went through there were objections from nearby residents, who feared increased traffic, noise, overlooking and light pollution.

Canterbury Cathedral was worried about the effect of cladding the flytower in silver grey.

Canterbury council will set up a neighbourhood forum to keep residents and businesses informed about progress.
