McDonald's in Sturry Road has reopened its restaurant after it was forced to close because a maggot fell from the ceiling.

Staff at the fast-food chain found a dead seagull on the roof of the building on Sunday.

The maggot is believed to have come from the bird.

Pest control company Ecolab has given the all-clear to the branch.

Manager Paul Crocker has confirmed it's business as usual.

He said: "I would like to thank our customers for their patience and understanding whilst we were only serving them in the drive thru lane.

"We are pleased that we are now fully open and back to normal."

The branch hit the headlines at the weekend when it closed the restaurant, but kept the drive-thru open, after finding maggots in the dining area.

Mr Crocker decided to keep the restaurant shut until today to make sure they were "100% sure there was no risk of any further occurrences".

On Sunday, he said: "We need to be 100% confident there are no further nasty little things coming through.

"Cleanliness and hygiene are a top priority for us and we adhere to the highest standards with strict and regular audits to ensure food safety and hygiene.

"As soon as this was brought to our attention we took the decision to close the restaurant."

"We are doing everything we can to resolve the issue."
