Thunderbirds, Teletubbies and Scooby-Doo have been raising
awareness of male cancers.
Family and friends came on Sunday to cheer on their dads, sons,
brothers and partners in the fifth Man on the Run charity
event.
Nearly 300 men turned out to walk or run the 5km course along
Herne Bay seafront and raise money for cancer research, with many
taking part in honour of loved ones who have battled the
illness.
Event organisers were hoping to beat last year’s total of
£4,000, with all cash going specifically towards preventing and
curing cancers which affect men.
With some participants in fancy dress and others in their
high-tech trainers everyone took part in the light-hearted pre-race
warm up before heading to the starting line.
The race was won by Jack Latham, 15, who was running in
celebration of his grandad Roy Latham, who has battled cancer.
For the Queen Elizabeth Grammar school pupil from Faversham it
is the third time he has taken part in the fun run, with the first
two being in honour of his grandmother, Mary Latham, who died from
cancer in 2002.
Jack said: "I am over the moon. It is such a great cause to be
running for and hopefully the £160 I have raised will be able to
help."
Event organiser Sarah Gower said: "Whilst events such as Race
for Life have increased the awareness of possible cancer risks for
women, there has been relatively little in the UK highlighting the
corresponding dangers for men, something which Man on the Run is
trying to address this with a fun, informal summer event."
