POLICE are investigating a fire at St Martin's Hospital in Canterbury which claimed the life of a mental health patient.

Firefighters were called to the hospital in Littlebourne Road shortly after 2.15pm on Friday and removed the male victim from his bedroom where the small fire started.

He was taken to Kent and Canterbury Hospital but later died. He has not yet been named.

The coroner has been informed and an inquest will be held.
