Gallivanting Griffin - Canterbury’s famous cat - found 15 miles away in Ashford after being missing for week

A missing cat who has become a celebrity in his home city has been found 15 miles away in another town - and may have been hit by a car.

Griffin, who lives in St Michael’s Road in Canterbury with his owner Rachel Craft, is well known for his adventures and had last been seen a week ago.

He even has a Facebook group dedicated to him called Gallivanting Griffin with 4,500 members who share photos of him relaxing in shops, other people’s homes and the University of Kent campus.

On Tuesday night, a picture was posted of the three-year-old Romanian rescue cat at Barrow Hill Vets in Ashford, where he had blood coming from his ear and mouth.

He had been spotted by pub-goers at the Alfred Arms in Newtown Green, 15 miles away from home.

Kerry Gale, who works at the pub, says Griffin walked inside meowing at about 6pm on Tuesday.

"At first I thought he had just come in to have a drink of water because of the heat. But then I noticed his injuries so followed him to see where he would go as I didn’t want to upset him," she said.

"But he just made himself comfortable in our cool pool room. So we were able to see him properly and noticed his injuries and took a picture to post on our local lost fluffy animal Facebook page."

She says staff then called a vet and rushed him to Barrow Hill.

"I then checked if we'd had any response to our post and someone tagged us in a post about Griffin, so we were then able to confirm that this was the missing cat who went missing a week previous,” she added.

"I then called the vet to confirm if his chip had the same details and we were told the owner would be called.

"I was so happy and thankful for him walking into our pub. He was so human-like. I just knew he was fully aware of what he needed to do; go to a pub and get help.

"After joining the page and reading that he was a popular cat and infamous for his adventures I just knew we did the right thing.

"He will always be remembered here by us all who helped and wish him a speedy recovery."

Later that evening, Miss Craft posted an update on Facebook, saying: “Hi everyone, apologies for the silence. I have just got home after taking Griffin to three different vets.

“He is stable and doing well considering that it looks highly likely that he has been hit by a car.”

She went on to explain that she would know more about her cat’s injury this morning but said it looked like his jaw was fractured and there was a potential leg fracture.

“He is staying at the vets overnight to have fluids and be monitored and then tomorrow morning [Wednesday we will be off to yet another vet for x-rays etc,” Miss Craft added.

“I will post an update once we know more.

“Thank you for everyone's well wishes and for all of the help in tracking him down. I'm sorry I have not had a chance to reply individually.”

Thousands of people had been keeping an eye out for Griffin and sharing their concerns on the group which Miss Craft said was a huge advantage when looking for him.

Speaking to KentOnline earlier in the day, the 28-year-old explained Griffin is very clever and “always manages to keep himself well fed and looked after”.

“He is also highly adventurous and cheeky, and will invite himself in wherever he likes,” she said.

A fundraiser has been started to help pay for Griffin’s vet fees.

Nearly £2,000 has already been raised in an hour of the fundraiser being made – beating the £800 target.
