Train travellers using stations in east Kent have been screened by a mobile metal detecting archway.

The screenings were part of Canterbury police’s Safer Summer campaign and were aimed at finding knives, guns or knuckle dusters.

An archway was also placed at the entrance to the Talk of Town nightclub in Herne Bay.

The action caught a 41-year-old Herne Bay man with a lockknife at the town’s train station. He was given a caution.

Supt Chris Hogben said: "The archway is one of the methods we are using across east Kent to ensure that those going out in the evening are deterred from carrying knives.

"Our operation at the weekend demonstrated that we are committed to ensuring that local communities and people visiting towns to enjoy a night out can do so safely.

“On Saturday night those who walked through the archway were in favour and supported what we are doing saying that they felt reassured and would welcome further such operations taking place."
