A parliamentary bill to get an extra bank holiday to honour our armed forces has been given the backing of Julian Brazier.
The Canterbury and Whitstable MP has co-sponsored a ten-minute rule bill which proposes that on the Monday after Remembrance Day the government should give the nation a day off.
The backing comes as he also paid tribute to the Argylls and 3rd Battalion Princess of Wales Royal Regiment, two units based in Canterbury.
In a recent YouGov poll, Remembrance Day was a favoured date for an extra holiday.
Mr Brazier said: "Having a national holiday to recognise the contribution of our armed forces would not be unusual.
"In the United States, Canada, Australia, Russia and France national holidays for their service personnel have been a date on the calendar for years.
"The brave men and women who serve in our armed forces and their families deserve to be properly recognised for the sacrifices they make.
"This is an opportunity for society as a whole to pay the enormous debt we owe to our armed forces, their families and our veterans.
"It is with great pride that I serve as MP to so many service men and women.
"Their contribution to the ongoing campaign in Afghanistan has been substantial.
"We should all be proud of the sacrifice our local regiments make when facing combat."
