MP rules himself out of race to be Speaker

Herne Bay MP Roger Gale says he is not seeking election for the job of Speaker of the House of Commons, despite bookmakers William Hill naming him as a potential candidate with odds of 20-1.

Speaking after Michael Martin announced his resignation following the expenses scandal, the long-serving Conservative member said: "It’s a fantastic job but I wouldn’t put a pound on me because I’m not throwing my hat into the ring.

"I can think of better people and can only imagine that William Hill has quoted odds on me because I’m a senior member of the Speakers Panel of Chairmen."

But Mr Gale said he did have a favourite candidate in Sir Alan Haselhurst, the current deputy speaker who William Hill quote at 14-1.

He said: "He hasn’t blotted his copy book like some and is straight as the day is long.

"He also did a very good job when he had to stand in for Speaker for two or three months."

He added: "But a dark horse could be David Davies who I think has huge courage and intellect and he would be my second choice if Sir Alan did not come through."
