Canterbury Rugby Club’s new head coach Andy Pratt says his side will step into the unknown when they begin their competitive season on Saturday.

Relegated from National 2 South last season, Canterbury are now in National League 3 London & South East and open their campaign at home to Bishop’s Stortford (3pm).

Pratt (pictured), who replaced Danny Vaughan as coach in May, admitted: "It’s six years since we have been at this level and we don’t really know what to expect because we haven’t played any of these teams.

"Also it’s my first season as a head coach, and so I have told the players we are all on a steep learning curve but I’m feeling optimistic.

"I am confident we can beat anyone in this division, but at the same time we will respect everybody."

After beating Westcombe Park 36-12 in their opening friendly fixture, Canterbury rounded off their pre-season preparations with a 41-0 victory over Sidcup last Saturday.

Pratt will finalise his 18-man squad for the opening game at Thursday’s training session, during which back row Peter Kelly (back) and second row Matt Lister (hamstring) will have fitness tests. Hooker Tom Rogers (calf) and Marshall (groin) are also carrying knocks but Pratt expects both men to be available on Saturday.
