A pensioner has told a judge he is to rip up his driving licence after hitting a child with his car.

Peter Price, of Hollowmede, Canterbury, made the promise minutes after pleading guilty to injuring the five-year-old by driving dangerously.

The incident happened as the 79-year-old drove his Citroen Picasso along Wingham High Street on December 7 last year.

Sentencing was adjourned until later this month for the preparation of a probation report and he was granted bail.

But as the judge imposed an interim driving ban, defence lawyer Philip Rowley told Judge Rupert Lowe that Price had planned to immediately contact the DVLA and request his driving licence be revoked.

The victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is believed to have suffered a broken pelvis in the incident.

At the next hearing, the judge will also read statements from the child’s parents about the impact the accident has had on their lives.
