A pedestrian was injured after a car crashed into a shopping centre leaving it severely damaged.

The Hyundai IONIQ5 crumpled after smashing into a column supporting the Fenwick service entrance in Canterbury.

The front bumper of the electric vehicle – which normally retails from £39,000 – came completely off in the crash on Watling Street on Friday evening.

The air bags deployed, smashing its windows in the process, while the windscreen has also been damaged.

The pedestrian was taken to hospital but it is understood they did not suffer serious injuries and nobody has been arrested, a police spokesman said.

Police attended the scene following the incident, which happened shortly before 4pm.

The vehicle blocked the service entrance to the department store while a recovery vehicle was sourced.

A police spokesman said: "Kent Police was called following a report that a car had collided with a pedestrian and a pillar in Watling Street, Canterbury at 3.55pm on Friday, June 17.

"Officers attended along with South East Coast Ambulance Service and the pedestrian was taken to a local hospital."
