Officials from the chain have confirmed experts later found no traces of any pests inside the business, but that additional cleaning was carried out as a precaution.

A spokesperson for department store chain said: “We are aware of this footage which shows a rat in the store doorway after it entered from the street.

"Pest control experts confirmed there were no traces of any pests in the store, and additional cleaning was carried out as a precaution.”

The video was posted on the Canterbury Residents' Group Facebook page, where commenters joked: "That's not just a rat, it's an M&S rat."

Another local added: "They get everywhere now, I've seen them where I work at a play school.

"It’s disgusting and they are just as brazen there because they are not scared of people now - horrible."
