Concerning images show damage after building partially collapses in tourism hotspot Burgate, in Canterbury

Striking images show the extent of damage to a city centre building after it partially collapsed in a tourism hotspot.

Emergency services evacuated those in properties near Canterbury Pottery in Burgate when the front began to crumble at 4.30pm.

Images captured this morning show bricks and other debris piled on the ground, with the building’s inside wall exposed to the elements.

Three fire engines were called to the scene near Canterbury Cathedral – one of the city’s busiest streets.

Speaking today, a fire service spokesperson said: “We were called yesterday to reports of a building had partially collapsed in Burgate, Canterbury.

“Three fire engines attended, and crews helped to evacuate people in any nearby buildings, and cordoned off the area until a building inspector arrived to inspect the building.

“There were no reported injuries, and the cause is not yet known.”
