A man in his 70s is in hospital after a late night attack in the city centre left him with a serious head injury.
Police are now looking for the assailant who approached the pensioner in the Borough at around 11.40pm on Saturday.
He spoke briefly to the victim before launching the assault in which the elderly man was punched and kicked.
The pensioner was taken to hospital for treatment for a serious head injury, where he remains.
The suspect is described as a white man aged in his late 30s, thought to be around 6ft 2ins tall and of medium build with facial stubble.
He was said to be wearing a Cossack-style hat made of a fur-like material, a brown shirt and blue jeans.
Detective Inspector Cara Ferguson said: "We would like to thank those witnesses who have spoken to officers already, and ask that anyone else who may have CCTV or mobile phone footage of the incident, or any information about the assault itself, call us on 01843 222289 quoting reference 46/22228/19."
