A senior police officer has described a report of a rape at the University of Kent as a 'distressing and heinous crime.'

DCI Nick Gossett was speaking as police launch a major investigation after a woman said she was raped in University Road, Canterbury.

Police rushed to the scene at just after 3.30am yesterday and the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate is investigating the incident.

A witness appeal has been issued and woodland close to the junction with Whitstable Road and University Road was sealed off for much of the day.

DCI Gossett, the senior investigating officer, said: "This is a distressing and heinous offence and our number one priority is ensuring the victim receives all of the necessary care and support.

"We are conducting ongoing enquiries into this and now have a description of the man we would like to speak with.

"He is described as being white and in his 20s or 30s. At the time he was wearing dark clothing and has very short, cropped, dirty blonde hair.

"If anyone believes they saw this man, or thinks they have information that can assist us with this case, I would encourage them to get in contact with us as soon as possible."

Yesterday university spokesman Gary Hughes said students and staff had been made aware of the incident and had been reminded of personal safety advice."
