Police officer reportedly attacked in Canterbury robbery response

A police officer is said to have been assaulted after responding to a city centre robbery.

The force was called to Wincheap in Canterbury yesterday evening after a man had his driving licence stolen in a reported mugging.

Police arrived and tracked down the suspect but during the arrest, an officer was assaulted.

A spokesman for the force said: “We were called to a report a man had robbed another man of his driver's licence in Wincheap, Canterbury at 9.05pm yesterday.

“Officers attended and quickly identified a suspect, who was arrested nearby on suspicion of robbery.

“During the arrest, a police officer was assaulted and the man was further arrested on suspicion of assault.

“The 37-year-old remains in custody and an investigation is being carried out.”

It comes following reports of a heavy police presence travelling along the city’s ring road, near Canterbury East Station, last night.
