A carpet of poppies has been laid at the feet of a magnificent wooden war horse created in the Precincts of Canterbury Cathedral.

The 20ft tall installation, built by students from the Canterbury School of Visual Arts with the help of sculptor Clive Soord, marks the sacrifice of war horses on the 100th anniversary of the end of the Great War.

This week, children from across the diocese have been helping to make the poppies from recycled plastic bottles at workshops at the Cathedral Education Centre.

The installation is part of a varied programme of commemorative exhibitions, events and special services called the Big Draw.

“It’s a great opportunity for young visitors to get involved in the Cathedral’s programme of remembrance and see their artwork on public display,” said Cathedral community engagement officer, Liam O’Driscoll.

The Canterbury War Horse will be on show until November 30.
