THE cause of a huge fire which has destroyed a carpet warehouse in Canterbury is being investigated. More than 100 firefighters tackled the blaze at Carpet Right at Wincheap.
Fourteen pumps and specialist vehicles from all over the county were called to the fire which broke out shortly before 8pm last night. Eight crews remained at the site this morning damping down.
Thermal image cameras and hoses were used to stop he flames spreading to the neighbouring Courts furnishers store, but it still suffered one-third damage.
Senior divisional officer Neal Fowler, who led the operations, said: “The fire crews have done a magnificent job in stopping the fire from spreading but they have had to avoid falling brickwork and smoke percolating through to the furnishing warehouse.”
