A MAN was slashed across the face in a revenge attack after a fight in a Kent pub.
Moments before the incident, an off-duty policeman had seen Daniel Waugh armed with a knife crossing Military Road in Canterbury.
He and his colleague did a three-point turn and drove back to the Leopards Head as Waugh came out covered in blood.
Officers thought he had been stabbed but realised he hadn’t been injured and arrested him. Waugh had returned to the Leopards Head following a fight with David Gorman.
He returned to his home at Notely Street, Canterbury, to get a knife then attacked Mr Gorman, cutting the left side of his face from his ear to the centre of his chin.
Waugh, 20, of Godwin Road, Canterbury, denied attempted murder and wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm when he appeared at Canterbury Crown Court.
But after prosecutor Martin Griffith had opened the Crown’s case, Waugh admitted the wounding charge and the more serious charge was left on the court file.
Waugh was remanded in custody as sentence was adjourned for six weeks for reports.
The court heard the incident arose on July 6 last year, after Mr Gorman described Waugh as "being a pain" and a fight ensued. Waugh was ushered out but later returned with the knife.
Waugh said he had drunk 10 pints that day and told police he had used the knife in self-defence.
But while on remand, he wrote two letters which were seen by the authorities. He said: "I was in the Leopards Head and got beaten up and I went back with a knife and slashed him down the face from top to bottom."
In the second letter he wrote: "I have said I was psychotic when I slashed that man’s face so hopefully I’ll get a lesser sentence if I say I didn’t know what I was doing, so I am pretending to be ill."
