Railings 'not the answer' at student crossing

Sorry, this video asset has been removed.

More railings in Canterbury's Lower Chantry Lane is not the answer to stopping students dodging traffic as they stream across the road.

That is the view of council highways officer Ruth Goudie who was speaking after an 18-year-old Canterbury College student was seriously injured.

The girl suffered a broken pelvis and collar bone after being hit by a van last Thursday lunchtime.

Spring Lane resident Adrian Minter feels students are putting their lives at risk by crossing the road 20 yards from a pedestrian crossing.

“I would like to see railings put up on the corner by Aldi car park and on the island to make people use the crossing," said Mr Minter, a marshall at Planet Lazer in St George’s Place.

But Mrs Goudie said: “People should be using the crossing.

“People make a decision at the end of the day and it is down to common sense.

“I am not a fan of sticking railings everywhere. They look horrible and cars smash into them."

The student was flown to hospital in London by the Kent Air Ambulance and is recovering from her injuries.
