Mourners follow the coffin of Rachel Barton into St Mary's Church
by Adam Williams
Emotional and moving tributes were paid to Chartham woman Rachel Barton on Thursday.
Friends and relatives of the 33-year-old joined the procession both before and after the service at St Mary’s Church.
Rachel died in a serious collision on the A28 near Thanington Without on the evening of Wednesday, May 27.
A massive Dolly Parton fan, Rachel (pictured right) saw her at least three times in concert. Two of the country singer’s songs played during the service: "Real Love," a duet with Kenny Rogers accompanied the white coffin into the church, while her solo hit "Take Me Back to the Country" played as the procession left for a burial at nearby Chartham cemetery.
A large print photo of Rachel’s smiling face sat at the front of the congregation, alongside her coffin.
Cousin Katie Brown fought back tears and emotions to read out a letter she wrote to Rachel following her death.
She said: "To my Rachel, I never had a real sister, but you meant so much more to me than that.
"I don’t know how my life will be without you, but I know it will never be the same.
"I’m so sad you will not get to see my Roxy (Katie’s two year old daughter) grow up.
"You were so beautiful and I don’t understand how things have happened and I don’t understand how things can improve.
"To me, you were perfect and you never liked the thought of getting old. You will always be young and beautiful.
"Not only have I lost a cousin, but I have lost a sister and a best friend.
"One day we will meet again I’m sure."
The Rev Phil Brown led the service and described how Rachel meant so much to so many people.
He said: "She was a well-turned out, lively and caring girl, who loved and enjoyed her life. She was also known as a bit of a karaoke queen.
"She loved people, especially those who had a kind spirit."
