A DEVASTATED family have welcomed the conviction of two "reckless and selfish" young drivers over the death of a devoted mother.

Colleen van Rooyen died after two cars driven by 20-year-olds Steven Vidler and Luke Dixon ploughed into her vehicle in Hollow Lane, Canterbury.

The 39-year-old teacher from the Wincheap area of the city had been on her way to collect her 12-year-old son from cricket practice when the tragedy happened last February.

A jury at Canterbury Crown Court convicted Vidler of causing death by dangerous driving and Dixon of dangerous driving.

Ms van Rooyen's brother, Peter van Rooyen, said: "We are pleased that those responsible have been held accountable for Colleen's needless death caused by their reckless and selfish behaviour.

"Young drivers need to realise their vehicles can be turned into killers if driven dangerously."

The victim's brother wanted the picture at the top of this page published as a warning to others.
