A signed diversion route has been put in place.

On its online incident map, South East Water says it is aware of the issue.

A spokesman for the company said: “We attended the site of the sinkhole on two occasions to investigate the surface water and the sinkhole.

“It was confirmed there was no leak on the South East Water apparatus in this area.

“We have discussed this with Highways, who are in agreement with our findings.

“We will be updating our website accordingly.”
