THE final moments of armed robber Robert Haines, shot dead as he raided a building society, have been described to a jury.

Haines, 41, from Challock, near Canterbury, had let loose one barrel from his sawn-off shotgun as he tried to make off with £105,000 from the Nationwide Building Society in New Romney.

After shouting a warning, a police marksman then fired three times before the married father-of-two fell to the ground and died shortly afterwards.

The detail was given as David Jenkins, of Pantheon Gardens, Kingsnorth, went on trial, accused of taking part in the robbery on October 31 last year.

Maidstone Crown Court heard how Metropolitan Police officers kept watch on the High Street building society before the robbery happened.

Ian Acheson, prosecuting, said just after 6pm a stolen Mercedes car driven by Jenkins’ son Dean, 40, pulled into a nearby car park.

Three minutes later David Jenkins, 61, parked his son’s Jaguar, which had been seen there in July “having a look”, in the High Street.

At one point, he turned the car around so that it was pointing in the opposite direction. Dean Jenkins called his father on his mobile phone.

Mr Acheson said a Securicor guard delivered cash to the society for the ATM at about 7.40pm.

He had taken in four full cassettes of cash when Haines, of Canterbury Road, Challock, arrived on the scene from the direction of the Mercedes.

Wearing a balaclava, he went up to the guard, held the shotgun to his head and told him: “Give me the money. I haven’t got much time.”

The guard did as he was told. Haines ran off towards the Mercedes parked up an alley after being given a bag of cash.

Dean Jenkins, the getaway driver, was arrested by the car. Ben Grehan, 22, was arrested at the wheel of a BMW in the High Street.

David Jenkins denies one count of robbery and one count of possessing a firearm at the time of committing an offence.

Dean Jenkins, of Wilks Close, Rainham, and Grehan, of Upper Norwood, have pleaded guilty to being involved in the robbery and admitted other armed raids.

The trial continues.
