Serious incidents see two cabbies banned from driving taxis

Two taxi drivers have had their licences revoked by the city council following their involvement in 'serious incidents’.

The first involved the theft of a rucksack from a passenger and the second followed a road accident in which the driver and passenger of another vehicle were injured.

The decision to revoke their licences was taken by the council’s commercial health manager who decided they were not 'fit and proper’ persons to hold a taxi driver’s licence.

The withdrawl of the licences is due to be reported to the council genral purposes committee on Monday night.

In his report licensing officer Dave Stevenson says the theft of the rucksack happened at Heathrow airport and was investigated by the Metropolitan police who discovered the rucksack had been given to the driver’s son.

The contents were never recovered but the driver pleaded guilty to theft and was fined.

The driver involved in the road accident near Canterbury was found to have overtaken another car on a blind bend and hit a vehicle coming in the other direction which resulted in a serious accident.

Neither driver has been named by the city council but have the right to appeal to the magistrates court.
