A KMTV documentary tells the shocking stories of midwifery students sent on placement with an under-fire hospitals trust.
It follows the release yesterday of the damning Kirkup report into maternity services at East Kent Hospitals, which found that 45 baby deaths could have been prevented with better care.
Documentary makers investigated why the midwifery course at Canterbury Christ Church University was pulled earlier this year following a report by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
It also analyses the links between the move and the ongoing issues within maternity services in east Kent.
Through conversations with those affected, the piece - edited by Sofia Ferreira Santos and produced by Ella Hambly - reveals the stresses students on the course went through, forcing some to drop out of the course altogether.
Reacting to the findings of the Kirkup review, Dr Malcolm Stewart, an ex-medical director at East Kent Hopsitals, said the atmosphere across all departments in the trust is going to be “dreadful” because there has been a “clear failure of leadership”.
He went on to say that CCCU is going to have to work very hard to make sure students will not be expected to work beyond their skill-base now the results of the Kirkup investigation are out.
