Motorists were slipping and sliding their way to work on Thursday morning as the district was once again covered in a blanket of snow.

In some places 10cm of the white stuff fell, leading to more than 30 school and nursery closures being reported on the kmfm website.

Heavy snow was predicted across the east and south of the county, with forecasts expecting the weather to improve by the afternoon.

Longs delays, stop-start traffic and hazardous driving conditions were seen on dozens of roads throughout Canterbury, Whitstable, Herne Bay and Faversham, with many minor roads and country lanes closing all together.

Amoung those affected was the A2 in both directions between M2, J7 (Brenley Corner) and A258, Whitfield, Dover. The A2 between Faversham and Dover was severely affected most of the way, with solid traffic Dover-bound for a least a mile heading towards the Whitfield junction. Cars were unable to move in places, with delays of around two hours.

The A2050 Rheims Way was only just passable, with icy conditions from A290, St Peter’s Place to A290, Wincheap Roundabout.Drivers were warned to take things slowly along the A251 Faversham Road between A252, Challock and A28 Canterbury Road, Ashford, with vehicles slipping and sliding their way along the carriageways.

Hills were reported by motorists in the area as particularly treacherous. The A28 Broad Street, around the Canterbury ring road was described as just passable, with hazardous driving conditions around the A257, St George’s Place.

Gritters were out trying to clear the way.

The snow also made the B2205 Canterbury Road at Belmont Road, and the B2205 Canterbury Road at Beltinge Road, tricky to negotiate.

Canterbury City Council have suspended rubbish collections across the district.

People who have already put either recycling or landfill waste out, are asked to leave it where it is, but to ensure that it is neither obstructing the footpath or the road.

Garden waste collections have also been suspended until further notice, with crews assigned to collecting garden rubbish being redirected to pick up household waste in the next few days or when the weather improves.
