Video: Soldiers and rugby
players come together for Help For Heroes.

A rugby match at Canterbury
RFC raised thousands of pounds for armed forces charity Help For
Heroes.

A 500-strong crowd braved the
winter winds at Merton Lane on Saturday to see Canterbury Past and
Present XV take on soldiers from the Fifth Battalion Royal Regiment
of Scotland, the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, based at the
city’s Howe Barracks.

Under 8s teams from Canterbury,
Deal, Thanet and Ash displayed their tag rugby skills before making
way for music from the Pipes and Drums of 5 Scots, who entertained
before kick-off and at half-time.

Both sides were welcomed on to the
pitch by the pipes, pausing for a minute’s silence with spectators
before kick-off.

The club and the battalion have
formed strong bonds since being based in the city and several
soldiers pull on the black and amber shirt for the club
throughout the season.

In the match itself, Canterbury
were emphatic 56-0 winners. Danny Weigh opened the scoring for
Canterbury with a try after just two minutes.
