A one-off festival inspired by hit TV series Game of Thrones is coming to Thanet after organisers were unable to find a big enough venue in Herne Bay.
Thousands of fans had been expected to descend on the town for ThroneFest next year but it has been moved to Quex Park in Birchington, which can hold up to 10,000 people.
The family-friendly festival, which is the brainchild of Bay Promo Team’s Gerald McCarthy, is on Sunday, May 18, 2018, and will feature guest appearances from actors in the HBO show, a jousting competition between the Starks and the Lannisters, and a 16ft smoke-breathing dragon.
White Walkers will also stalk the crowds, some on horseback.
Mr McCarthy says despite a search for a venue in Herne Bay there is nowhere large enough to cater for such an event.
“We’re disappointed not to have it here, but we have to be realistic,” he said.
“Some of the jousting teams need a large amount of space to set up and the re-enactments and the medieval village will take up a lot of room.
“If we could have it in Herne Bay we would, but this is only 10 minutes up the road so it’s not too far.”
The team had a site visit to the Thanet venue and Mr McCarthy says the set-up will be perfect for the event with the bell tower acting as the backdrop of Kings Landing.
Stars of the show are expected to attend, although organisers are not confirming who they will be until details are finalised with the actors.
Fans will also have the chance to have a sword-fighting lesson with Ayra Stark’s teacher Syrio Forel, played by Miltos Yerolemou in the show.
Archers who trained some of the cast will be on hand, too.
“There will be wolves, ravens, White Walkers, a collection of swords and shields, and flags,” Mr McCarthy added.
“We’ll have a medieval market, some modern stalls selling merchandise and re-enactments.
“And of course we’ll have a replica of the Iron Throne for people to have their pictures taken on.”
