Both Canterbury’s train stations have been given secure station status by the Department of Transport and British Transport Police.

The status rewards work to reduce crime such as CCTV coverage, lighting and regular removal of graffiti and follows positive results in a passenger survey.

Southeastern’s managing director Charles Horton said: “This is another significant step, both for Southeastern and for our passengers. Safety and security remain our highest priorities.”

Canterbury MP Julian Brazier met Southeastern commercial director Vince Lucas at Canterbury West station.

He said: “Since Southeastern took over, I have noticed a significant improvement in the local service, and have been receiving fewer complaints from constituents.

“I feel that this is an important step forward in providing peace of mind and quality of service for users, especially more vulnerable ones.”
