Student talks of Facebook shame

A UNIVERSITY student has spoken of her shame after a “light-hearted” comment she made was used to highlight spiralling levels of alcohol abuse among young women.

Lindsay Gordon made a remark about pole-dancing around lampposts on a section of social networking website Facebook called “30 reasons girls should call it a night”.

National newspapers printed photographs of girls sprawled in bushes, collapsed on the floor and lying in a bathtub alongside comments from the site, including one from Miss Gordon.

It read: “Pole-dancing around lampposts is usually a good laugh.”

The Canterbury Christ Church University student this week distanced herself from the comment and said she had removed it and herself from the group.

“I’m no longer into this lifestyle and am highly embarrassed about the whole thing," she said.

“These days I’m focused on my degree and have only been to a nightclub twice in the last 18 months.”

Miss Gordon added: “I felt the whole thing was taken out of context. It was only meant as a light-hearted comment.”

Christ Church spokeswoman Claire Draper said: “While the university accepts socialising is an important part of university life, we encourage students to take a sensible approach to alcohol.”
