Loved-up couples got that loving filling when they shared an intimate Valentine's meal - at Subway in Canterbury.

Hopeless romantics took their sweethearts to the sandwich shop, in St Peter's Street, for a foot-long of their choice to celebrate the feast day for lovers.

It may not seem like the most romantic setting, but with red tablecloths, candles, champagne flutes and heart-shaped balloons, it almost rivaled the most high-class restaurants.

The eatery was transformed into a lovers' paradise, with decorations and even live musicians to serenade the amorous couples.

The competition to win the free Valentine's meal was organised by events company Student Republic, which offered "the greatest chance to prove your love for that special person in your life".

They said: "Sit back and relax as your waiters bring you the foot-long of your choice, drinks and even cookies - the choice is yours.

"Never before has the upstairs seating area above Subway near the Marlowe Theatre been closed for private dining. Prove that you love them - take them to Subway."

Among the couples were lovebirds Corin Harper, 21, and Laura Le Couteur Bisson, 19, who were on one of their first dates.

After meeting Laura at a party two weeks ago, Corin entered the competition in an attempt to woo her - and it worked.

He said: "I was hoping to use tonight to win her over. It's fantastic. The waiter still asked if we wanted our subs with cheese and toasted, which was funny. I like that familiarity."

A clearly-smitten Laura said: "It's overwhelming how nice it all is. A date for me is usually a few drinks at the pub, so I'm not used to being so spoilt!

"It's really lovely and much more special than I expected."

At the next table, couple of four months Becky Bloomfield, 20, and John Whybrow, 22, were enjoying their meal.

The romantic setting was in stark contrast to the last time they dined there.

Becky said: "I love Subway, but I usually get it after the pub. I like the chicken tikka sub, but I've gone for chicken teriake to make it more special.

"I entered for a joke, but it's quite fun."

Her beau went for the Subway staple, an Italian BMT. He said: "It's great. I don't think I've actually had a Subway sober before, so it's an experience."
