A man who has lived in the woods for almost 25 years has received a surge of support since the Gazette highlighted his plight last week.
Homeless charities have stepped in to help Steve Williamson since we told the story of his troubled life and battle to find a home.
Kind-hearted reader Christine Reynolds, from Sturry, also donated food, clothes and supplies to the 44-year-old, who lives in a tent in woods at Herne Common.
She said: “When I read the story I was really shocked. In this day and age I don’t think anybody should have to live like that.
“I really felt for Steve because no one wants to be out in the cold at this time of year.
“I just want him to feel a little bit more comfortable and really hope he finds a home soon.”
Among the supplies donated by Christine were thermal clothes, a duvet, new saucepan, tinned food and a bone for Steve’s dog Jack.
Steve said: “I can’t thank her enough. Since the story went in the paper people have been so supportive. They’ve been coming up to me in the street and asking how I’m doing and some have given me money for food.
“I’ve roamed around this country and people have always looked down at me, but not here. I’ve had nothing but love and affection from the people of Herne Bay.
This is my home now – I just need to put a roof over it.”
Steve is also receiving support from local agencies in his search for somewhere to live.
Mark Parry, of homeless charity Porchlight, said: “Porchlight and other local agencies are working with Steve in order to find him suitable supported accommodation as quickly as possible."
Mr Parry urged anyone who comes across someone who needs help finding a home to call 0800 5677699.
