Sturry library has been damaged in a suspected arson attack after a bin was pushed up against the building and set alight.

Three crews of firefighters were called to the scene in Chafy Crescent at about 8.30pm on Sunday.

They managed to stop the blaze spreading but some of the roof and internal area and facilities, including books were damaged.

Fire investigators are examining the source of the blaze which is believed to be the rubbish bin.

Police have also been called in and a suspected arson investigation launched.

KFS spokesman Sacha Taylor said: "Our investigators and police forensic officers are at the scene this morning to establish the cause of the fire which, at this time, is believed to have been started deliberately."

Kent County Council spokesman Lisa Whitbread said: "The library has had to close but the plan is to re-open as soon as possible.

"However, if after assessment the repairs are likely to take some time, staff will be looking at providing library services at alternative premises in Sturry.

In the meantime, nearby libraries for customers include those in Pound Lane, Canterbury, Herne Bay and Whitstable.
