Teen arrested after video of attack on Sainsbury’s security guard in Canterbury goes viral

A teenager has been arrested after a video of a Sainsbury’s security guard being attacked went viral on social media.

Footage of the incident at the supermarket in Kingsmead Road, Canterbury, on Sunday has since been viewed more than 80,000 times on Instagram.

Police were called after a man aged in his 40s suffered an injury to his leg that required hospital treatment.

A video of the incident, which happened at about 3.30pm, was captured by a customer at the supermarket and shows the guard being pushed and shouted at by a boy.

The youngster is then surrounded by staff and customers trying to move him away from the security guard.

But the footage then shows the boy pushing the guard near the fruit and veg aisle.

He is then held back by someone and told by one of the Sainsbury’s workers to “get out”.

The video, which is about one minute and 15 seconds long, has been viewed tens of thousands of times on Instagram and Facebook.

A police spokesperson said: “Officers were called at around 3.35pm on Sunday to a report of an assault at Sainsbury’s in Kingsmead Road, Canterbury.

“The victim, a man in his 40s, suffered an injury to his leg during the incident that required hospital treatment.

“Officers carried out inquiries and on Wednesday arrested a 16-year-old boy from Canterbury on suspicion of assault.

“He has since been released on bail until Thursday, November 9.”

Sainsbury’s has also been contacted for comment.
