Teenage full-back Jack Masters clinches late Canterbury win in National League 2 South

Jack Masters kicked a penalty in the dying seconds of their final National League 2 South game against Lydney to win the match.

Masters was one of several young players appearing for Canterbury in the end of season match as head coach Danny Vaughan (pictured) gave youth a chance.

The 17-year-old had a 38 metre penalty chance and the young full-back, who was making his first senior appearance, successfully converted. He earlier kicked two penalties and converted two of Canterbury’s three tries.

Canterbury just edged the tight game thanks to their superior pace against a side who had more strength on the day.

It wasn’t a great start to the day as Lydney scored two tries in the first 17 minutes to lead 13-3.

Mick Melford scored Canterbury’s opening try after a turnover in midfield Peter Kelly alloed Melford to chip ahead and he won the race to the line.

Gert De Kock scored the second try with his pace getting him across thew line.

Canterbury reached half-time with a narrow lead but promptly threw it away at the re-start as Lydney turned the ball over and scored a converted try.

A Masters penalty and a second try from Melford put the visiting Canterbury side back in charge.

The lead changed hands for the fourth time with another home try but with time running out Lydney offended at a ruck and Masters kicked the winner.
