Boy, 15, arrested on suspicion of arson after Debenhams blaze in Canterbury

A 15-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of causing the devastating blaze at an empty Debenhams store .

A fire broke out at the property in Guildhall Street in Canterbury city centre at around 8.45pm yesterday (Monday).

Roads had to be closed and homes evacuated while fire crews tackled the blaze that continued throughout the night.

One man was treated by medics for the effects of smoke inhalation.

At its peak, eight fire engines were in attendance.

Police and fire crews are still at the scene now 24 hours later and continue to work to make the area safe.

Today, a local teenager attended Canterbury police station and was arrested shortly afterwards on suspicion of arson.

He remains in custody while inquiries continue.

Detectives are appealing for information regarding the incident, and would like to thank those who have already come forward and spoken to officers.

Meanwhile, in an update at 8pm today, the fire service said three fire engines and one height vehicle would remain in the High Street overnight.

The spokesman added: "Crews have worked very hard to control the blaze.

"There is no longer a need to keep windows and doors closed.

"Thank you to local businesses and the public."
