Bobby and Alex Clay celebrated their international track debuts with gold medals on Saturday.

They both recorded personal and season bests to help England win the Aviva Schools International Athletic Board Home International under-17 Championships at the Julie Rose Stadium in Ashford.

The teenage sisters from Wingham, cheered on by a large group of family and friends, competed within half an hour of each other,

Bobby won the 1500m in 4.24.91, and Alex clinched an England one-two double success, coming home first in the 3000 metres in 9.38.23.

Bobby (pictured left) was up against Cumbrian rival Abbie Henderson, who she beat in the recent English Schools Championships at Gateshead.

She said: "Having raced against her then, I thought she would be my biggest rival.

"She went off quite quick but having waited until 500m left before making my move in the schools, I sensed this time that the pack was getting closer, so I decided to go at 600m this time.

"It probably looked a comfortable win for the spectators but I had no idea how far in front I was at the end.

Alex (pictured right) was the B athlete in her race but finished ahead of A rival Bronwen Owen from Scarborough.

She said: "It was a tough race for me and run at quite a fast pace.

"I managed to hang on and took the lead just after the bell. To have people supporting us was a good experience and made for a great atmosphere."

They are in action again this weekend at a British Milers Club Invitational Memorial event in Oxford.
