The average house price in a part of Kent is nine times the majority of its residents' annual earnings.
Canterbury has been ranked the 16th least affordable city in the UK for housebuyers in a new study published by Halifax.
It found that the amount a resident would usually fork out for a property stood at more than £365,000, while average salaries are about £40,500 per year.
Out of the UK's 69 cities, Winchester was identified as the least affordable, replacing previous table-topper Oxford, with homes now 14 times annual earnings for those living and working there.
Halifax managing director Russell Galley said: “Affordability is significantly better in the north.
"There are now just two cities – Plymouth and Portsmouth – with better-than-average affordability in the south.”
London was outside the top five least affordable cities for the first time in six years.
And Londonderry in Northern Ireland held its position as the UK’s most reasonably priced for the third year in a row, with a value-to-earnings ratio of 4.7.
