The son of Canterbury MP Julian Brazier has been sent a menacing note threatening to make him “pay” for the EU referendum result.
John Brazier – himself a Tory city councillor – opened a letter this week which read simply: “You cheating lying b******. You will pay for Brexit.”
Cllr Brazier says he is surprised by the content because he did no campaigning in the run-up to the June 23 vote, when the UK voted 52% to 48% to quit the European Union.
“I was very confused when I first saw it,” he said.
“I didn’t do any campaigning and I wasn’t actually sure which way I was going to vote until very late in the day, although I did actually vote to leave.
“So it definitely surprised me. I suppose it’s the sort of thing that happens when you get into politics.”
Cllr Brazier, whose father has been the Conservative MP for Canterbury and Whitstable since 1987, was elected to the city council’s Westgate ward last May.
The 23-year-old has kept a fairly low profile and combines his political role with a job in advertising in London.
He received the letter on Monday after it was the sent to the Conservative Party office at the Canterbury City Council offices in Military Road.
“I suppose it’s all part of learning what it’s like to be a councillor,” he added.
“I’ve been learning a lot very quickly since I’ve been elected. But it’s all been really good and I’ve enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. I’m not going to report this note or anything. It was odd, though.”
Asked if his father had ever received any similar messages or threats, Cllr Brazier said: “Well, he did have manure hurled at his front door about 10 years ago.”
