Fire destroys outbuildings in The Grove at Barham

Firefighters acted quickly this afternoon to prevent gas cylinders from exploding after a bonfire spread to a range of outbuildings.

Crews from Canterbury and Folkestone who raced to the site in The Grove at Barham could see the billowing smoke of the blaze from the A2.

They arrived to find three sheds well alight which contained old lawnmowers and other gardening equipment. Surrounding stored wood and tyres were also on fire.

Gas cylinders nearby were moved away and cooled to prevent them overheating and another shed and lean to saved from the flames.

Canterbury firefighter Mark Jones said: "Fortunately, the sheds were well away from the main property but we did have to cool down a car parked nearby.

"We believe it was started by a nearby bonfire."

Crews remained damping down the scene until around 2.30pm
