Rush-hour motorists will face traffic chaos for 20 weeks as one of Canterbury's busiest roads is temporarily made a one-way street.
Parts of the city centre are expected to be brought to a standstill as work to widen a bus lane is carried out along a stretch of Sturry Road.
The busy commuter route will be just one-way between Vauxhall Road and South Street for vehicles heading into the city.
Meanwhile, motorists heading out of Canterbury towards Sturry, Herne Bay and Thanet will be diverted along Kingsmead Road, Broad Oak Road and back along Vauxhall Road.
The changes, which are likely to cause huge queues in the afternoon rush-hour as people travel home from work, will see a new bus, taxi and cycle lane created.
A resident living in Sturry Road said: "Residents who will suffer are being ignored. Most of the people affected in the bungalows are elderly or disabled.
"Are we to be confined to our homes for 20 weeks? Where are we to get a bus? There are no indications of where buses will stop, and several people would certainly be unable to walk as far as Vauxhall Road.
"It's extremely frustrating as most of us do not have cars - we are going to be trapped for months.
"Anybody who lives between Asda and Vauxhall Road, including the Reed Avenue estate will be unable to get a bus home from town. Does anybody care about this?"
The restructure is earmarked to start on Monday, April 9 but trees on the south side of the road will be removed by contractors from tomorrow.
