It is understood they first arrived a couple of days ago.

But the group have promised to leave the site before the school reopens to pupils on Wednesday.

Mike Walters, executive principal at St Anselm's said: "We have spoken to the traveller community who have taken up residence at St Anselm’s.

"We have explained that pupils will return next week and community members have assured us they will have left the site before then.

"The individuals we have spoken to have been polite and pleasant in all our dealings with them."

Police say they were made of the "traveller incursion on private land" yesterday morning.

A spokesman said: "Officers have attended and are working with the landowner regarding the matter."
