Two men have been arrested after copper piping was cut from the loft of a university building.

An angle grinder was seized by police at Canterbury Christchurch University's business centre in Harbledown on Sunday evening.

It was the second time the premises had been targeted that day, with an earlier break-in at about 1am.

Two Canterbury residents, aged 31 and 41, were caught in the loft of the business centre at 6pm.

The pair were arrested on suspicion of burglary and bailed until February 28. They remain under investigation.

Inspector Guy Thompson said: "We urge residents and businesses in Canterbury to remain vigilant to this type of offending and report anything suspicious to us straight away.

"While some burglars are part of organised groups, many are just opportunistic, so take some time to check your security arrangements, ensure burglar alarms are on, good lighting is installed to help illuminate a premises, and CCTV is set up to make it as hard as possible for thieves."
