A driver who brought traffic in Canterbury to a standstill after their van ploughed through a level crossing has been told they could yet face action in court.

The vehicle ploughed into the gate at St Dunstan's during peak rush hour at about 5pm yesterday.

The clean-up operation to make the crossing safe lasted about three hours, with trains running into and from Canterbury West suffering delays.

Motorists were stuck on the key city route as officers tried to manage traffic throughout the evening.

Police attended the scene and spoke to the driver of the van involved.

They were issued with a notice of intended prosecution for careless driving and officers say they are in the process of gathering CCTV evidence to support a potential case.

The crossing, which was fully fixed by 8pm, is working as normal today.

Officers from Kent Police, and British Transport Police were called to the scene yesterday, along with workers from Network Rail.

No injuries were reported from the incident.
